Daljit Nagra and Lily Mosini

Welcome to Off the Shelf

Sheffield’s Annual Celebration of Writing and Reading
8th – 29th October 2011

Daljit Nagra and Lily Mosini
Thu 27 October 2011 @ 7.30pm
Quaker Meeting House

Daljit Nagra’s debut Look We Have Coming to Dover! marked the arrival of a thrilling new voice in poetry. Tippoo Sultan’s Incredible White-Man-Eating Tiger Toy-Machine!!!, his second volume, takes its cue from the eighteenth-century automaton (a tiger savaging a British soldier) in a series of poems that begin at the throat of the old British Empire. Daljit creates his own linguistic bhaji: where Shakespeare meets the Subcontinent in a range of forms from sonnets to ‘bollyverse’ or the tender love songs of the monsoon and cover everything from race relations to Rudyard Kipling A comic, passionate, satirical and thought-provoking collection.

Iranian poet Lily Mosini has experienced brutal persecution because of her work, and now lives with the threat of deportation. This is an unmissable opportunity to hear this powerful writer and activist. Clare Shaw will be joining Lily to read translations.
